I didn't get a chance to blog a single word while I was on vacation. And that's OK! (By me, anyway...) But now I'm back and feel like I want to catch up... My trip was both too long and too short, filled with frustration (especially the "getting there" part!) and joy and revelations and family and friends. There was a whole lot of food, some knitting, a bunch of snow, a few chilly beaches and a lot of driving. It was great but I was without my wonderful M and so I'm overwhelmingly glad to be back, despite the fact that it is currently eighty-three degrees outside.
Three of my favorite things from my brief stay in Maine:
I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things, despite the various technical and personal difficulties I've encountered over the past few weeks. I'd like to take a moment to gush about our fabulous vacation to Arizona. I've posted a couple of photos here and there...but I haven't really said anything about it! It was wonderful and amazing and stressful all at the same time. M and I have never gone on a "real" vacation together, where we weren't just going to visit family or something, so this was really great. Our travel went smoothly, much to my surprise, and we had no problems with our flights or rental car or anything. Neither of us had ever been to Arizona, other than when I drove through on the way to the west coast several times in college, so it was all new! We oohed and aahed at the scenery, which changed rapidly from cacti and desert to red rocks and mountains to piney forests and canyons as we traveled. Home base was a timeshare in Sedona that my parents supplied. (They were there too, as well as my sister and her man.) Lucky for our pocketbooks, the places had full kitchens so we didn't eat out once in Sedona. I'm torn about that - it's nice to experience local eateries, but our wallets are thanking us for foregoing that particular pleasure. Also, we got to cook for each other and it was wonderful to share home-cooked (timeshare-cooked?) meals with the family. We even made homemade tortillas one morning to enfold our breakfast tacos - their first! I am overjoyed to have introduced breakfast tacos to my northern family and more overjoyed that they liked them!
We saw the Grand Canyon for the very first time...it's...really...big... I was impressed. And dismayed to find that, as I had suspected, it proved to be very difficult to capture the sheer enormity of the scenery in photos. I have loads of pictures of the canyon. Every time the light changed, I snapped one. Every time a band of mules crested the rim, I snapped one. Every time I saw a big horn sheep, even if I only thought I did, I snapped one... Some of them came out quite nicely, but the fact is, they all rather look alike.
The red rocks in the Sedona area were most impressive and I couldn't get enough of them. We visited Red Rock State Park and the airport vortex and a lovely park along Oak Creek Canyon whose name escapes me at the moment... We drove and we drove, just to see the scenery. We visited Jerome and a fish hatchery. Everywhere we went, the sights were amazing. And the sky and the sunset were like nothing I'd ever seen before. So big and open and filled with beautiful colors and clouds.
I've been knitting up a storm now that I'm back, and cooking too! I've got a bunch of recipes to share and some new projects I've been working on that I hope to be able to share soon. You may see my cooking and recipes become a little more focused on frugality in the coming weeks and months - we're trying to save money for some life changes next year and I found out for sure that the grant that funds my position at work is not being renewed. So. Pinching pennies! Hope you all are having a lovely week!
